From Loose Oil Palm Fruits to Legitimate Palm Oil Value Chains: A Review
This journal examines the importance of oil palm loose fruits, which have often been considered a technical issue during harvest, yet they affect oil quality, mill efficiency, farmer income, and supply chain management. Using a narrative review method of the latest scientific literature since 2020, this study shows that loose fruits contain valuable oil but are prone to quality degradation due to delayed collection, bruising, long harvest intervals, and mixing with FFB. The impact is evident in the increased free fatty acid levels and decreased CPO quality. This study emphasizes the need for an integrated approach through more regular harvesting, faster post-harvest handling, support for smallholders, quality incentives, and more inclusive certification design. Thus, managing loose fruits can be an entry point to improving productivity, farmer welfare, and the credibility of palm oil sustainability.
