Integrated Palm Oil Production Systems: Navigating Complexity from Upstream Cultivation to Downstream Value Creation in the Sustainability Era

April 20, 2026397 views

This research examines the complexity of the integrated oil palm production system that connects upstream to downstream activities amidst global sustainability demands. The study aims to analyze how vertical integration, horizontal coordination, and oil palm–livestock integration interact with supply chain governance, ecological capacity, and economic profitability, while also assessing the position of smallholders within the system. The method used is a qualitative literature review of scientific publications and policy reports from the period 2020–2025, with a thematic synthesis approach to identify patterns, challenges, and integration opportunities. The study's results indicate that integrated systems—including livestock–crop integration and downstream industrialization—have the potential to increase efficiency, reduce chemical dependency, and expand economic value-added. However, fragmentation in certification governance, inequality in value distribution, and limited support for smallholders remain major obstacles. This research emphasizes the importance of policy harmonization, strengthening farmer institutions, and a landscape integration approach to balance economic productivity with environmental sustainability.
