Navigating Biodiesel Expansion, Traceability, and Climate Risk: A Review of Indonesia’s Oil Palm Sector Outlook for the Third Quarter of 2026

September 2, 2026486 views

This article examines the prospects of Indonesia's palm oil sector in the third quarter of 2026 as biodiesel expansion, traceability pressures, and climate risks converge. The aim is to synthesize policy and market evidence to understand the direction of production, domestic consumption, exports, prices, governance, and sustainability. Using a qualitative literature review method on scientific studies, official statistics, industry reports, and policy documents primarily since 2020, this article finds that Indonesia's palm oil market is entering a constructive yet tight period. B50 strengthens domestic absorption, prices remain relatively strong, but supply space is constrained by aging plants, slow replanting, smallholder productivity gaps, uneven legality and traceability, and El Niño risks. The implication is that palm oil competitiveness needs to be built through productivity improvements, smallholder support, certification, legality, traceability, and more coordinated climate resilience.
