Neuroprotective Potential of Palm Oil-Derived Tocotrienols: Evidence from Neurodegenerative Disease Models and Emerging Clinical Data
This journal reviews the potential of palm oil-derived tocotrienols, particularly the tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF), as neuroprotective agents in neurodegenerative and neurovascular disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, vascular dementia, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and stroke. Through a mini review of mechanistic studies, preclinical, and early clinical data, this study shows that palm tocotrienols work through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mitochondrial protection, anti-apoptosis pathways, and support neurovascular function. The strongest evidence still comes from preclinical models, while human data is beginning to emerge, especially in diabetic and cerebrovascular complications. The implication is that palm tocotrienols have prospects as nutraceutical candidates for supporting nerve health, but still require large clinical trials with standardized formulations and robust neurological parameters before routine use.
