Sustainable Landscape Approach for Post-Flash Flood Reconstruction in Sumatra: A Review

July 23, 2026616 views

This journal examines a sustainable landscape approach for post-flash flood reconstruction in Sumatra 2025, which resulted in significant loss of life, damage to homes, and substantial economic losses. Through a qualitative literature review of 85 sources from the period 2020–2026, this study assesses that the disaster was not only triggered by weather factors but also by upstream watershed degradation, deforestation, weak spatial planning, and conversion of protected areas. This study emphasizes the need for reconstruction that does not stop at infrastructure development but integrates the principles of Build Back Better, Nature-based Solutions, ecosystem restoration, agroforestry, community participation, and multi-stakeholder governance. The implication is that the recovery of Sumatra should be directed towards upstream forest restoration, risk-based zoning, strengthening local livelihoods, and innovative financing so that reconstruction becomes a momentum for building long-term ecological and social resilience.
