The Strategic Importance of Palm Oil as a Source of Renewable Energy
June 11, 2025463 views
Palm oil is now recognized as one of the most strategic renewable energy sources, thanks to its high productivity per hectare and national policy support from major producing countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. As a raw material for biodiesel, biogas from POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) waste, and biomass from empty fruit bunches and kernel shells, oil palm plays a crucial role in the clean energy transition. This role becomes increasingly relevant in the context of the climate crisis and the global need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Currently, palm-based biodiesel accounts for approximately 36% of the world's total biodiesel production. In Indonesia, the implementation of the B30 policy has successfully diverted millions of kiloliters of CPO from the food sector to the energy sector. This move has directly impacted the reduction of diesel imports by up to 20% per year and resulted in significant foreign exchange savings. Technological advancements, including transesterification efficiency and the utilization of POME for biogas, have further expanded energy utilization from the palm sector. On the other hand, the use of solid waste for off-grid electricity generation supports the national electrification agenda.
From an environmental perspective, several studies show that sustainably produced palm biodiesel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 65% compared to conventional diesel. Certification systems such as ISPO and RSPO are important instruments to ensure sustainability standards. Additionally, the utilization of methane gas from POME can prevent the release of millions of tons of CO₂e annually.
Socio-economically, the palm-based energy industry supports the livelihoods of approximately 17 million people in Indonesia. The integration of smallholders into the bioenergy supply chain has been proven to increase household income by up to 27%. However, challenges still arise in the form of access to certification, funding, and markets. Moving forward, improved governance, more inclusive policies, and sustainable innovation are key to ensuring that palm oil continues to contribute to a fair and sustainable energy transition.
