Advancing Precision Medicine: A Review of Drug-Device Combination Products for Individualized Therapy

July 23, 2026127 views

This journal reviews the role of Drug-Device Combination Products (DDCPs) in promoting precision medicine, particularly for more personalized therapy in chronic and complex diseases. Through a qualitative literature review of 67 scientific articles, this study shows that the integration of drugs with devices such as smart insulin pens, digital inhalers, drug delivery implants, biosensors, and AI-based systems can enhance patient adherence, enable real-time monitoring, and allow for more adaptive dosing adjustments. The main findings affirm the potential of DDCPs in improving clinical outcomes in diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurological disorders. However, their implementation is still hindered by non-uniform regulations, high development costs, data privacy issues, algorithmic bias, and access disparities. The implications are that global standard harmonization, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and inclusive financing policies are needed to ensure that this innovation can be applied safely, ethically, and equitably.
