Downstream Processing and Value-Added Job Creation in Palm Oil: A Systematic Review of Employment Opportunities in Bioeconomy Development

February 25, 2026548 views

This journal examines the role of palm oil downstream processing in creating value-added jobs in the bioeconomy era. Aiming to synthesize the latest empirical evidence, the study employs a PRISMA-based Systematic Literature Review of 32 Scopus articles from the 2019–2025 period. The results indicate that advanced processing—such as refining, oleochemicals, bioenergy, and biomaterials—enhances the absorption of skilled labor, wages, and job diversification compared to the upstream sector. Digitalization and sustainability standards also contribute to the emergence of green jobs. The implication is that downstream processing policies, human resource development, and sustainable governance are key to transforming the palm oil industry towards an inclusive bioeconomy.
